Group Counselling Support & Facilitation

Do you sometimes feel isolated because you think you are the only one who struggles with a particular problem?

Are you looking for a more cost effective counselling solution?

If this sounds like you then Group counselling could be a good choice.

I offer groups around the following topics:

  • Emotional Eating and Body Image
  • Parenting
  • Women’s groups
  • Men’s groups
  • LGBTQ support groups

What does Group Counselling look like?

If you joined one of the groups that I facilitate, you would meet with 3 to 9 other individuals once a week, or every two weeks, for 2 – 3 hours. You and every other member in the group would set your personal goal(s).

In the first session we would agree on group rules together to create a safe and confidential environment. Every group member would commit to participating regularly for an agreed number of sessions. Usually groups are “closed” which means that for the duration of the group no new members will join.

During the sessions, members share their problems. Throughout the course of interaction and under my supportive guidance and facilitation, you and the other participants are able to give support, offer alternatives, or gently challenge each other.

What are the benefits of Group counselling?

There are many advantages to working in a group. Often, you receive as much or more benefit from others' work as you do your own. Others' issues can touch off your own and lead you deeper into the work you need to do.

In a group you can:

  • Find out more about how you are perceived by others and hear different viewpoints on issues
  • Experience a sense of acceptance and belonging
  • Discover that you are not alone in the difficulties you are experiencing
  • Hear ideas from others, which enhance your ability to make decisions and solve problems
  • Benefit from the experience of being helpful to others
  • Practice and learn new interpersonal behaviours
  • Become skilled at expressing your feelings and ideas constructively to others
  • Gain encouragement by observing the successes of others

As you can see, Group counselling is really an effective form of counselling experience as members share what is going on for them, learn from each other and also come to know that everyone has similar problems. In fact, research has shown Group counselling to be as effective as individual counselling.
